AusNet roadside surveys February 2025

Throughout February 2025, AusNet will be conducting Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys and environmental DNA (eDNA) testing within public roadsides.

Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys - R Charleson Road, Creswick

The Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys will identify if evidence of Aboriginal cultural heritage is present and assess the extent, nature, and significance of any material that is identified. These surveys will involve digging small holes in roadside areas to examine the ground where the proposed Western Renewables Link easement crosses over distribution powerlines. The survey findings will be used to assess the potential impacts to Aboriginal cultural heritage within and surrounding the proposed route and ensure appropriate measures are taken to protect it.  We expect these surveys to be completed within four (4) days.

Environment DNA (eDNA) testing - Werona-Kingston Road, Kingston and Newlyn Reservoir Road, Newlyn North

Environmental DNA (eDNA) testing involves collecting and analysing genetic material found from water or soil to identify the presence of a species and their habitat without needing to directly observe them. Ecologists will be visiting several roadside waterways to collect samples and we expect these surveys to be completed in one (1) day.

About the project

The Western Renewables Link is a proposed electricity transmission line that will carry renewable energy from western Victoria to homes and businesses across the state and into the National Electricity Market.

The project is critical infrastructure required to unlock the renewable energy potential of western Victoria as a key Renewable Energy Zone and will help to deliver clean and affordable energy to all Victorians.
